Biosprit Subventionen abschaffen

Die FAZ legt in einem Kommentar nahe, dass die NRO Bemühungen für ein Ende der Nahrungsmittelspekulation das Ergebnis einer staatlichen "Verblendungsstrategie" ist, um von den Biosprit-Subventionen abzulenken. Das ist natürlich Quark.

Aber abgeschafft gehören diese Subventionen allemal, und zwar nicht nur in Zeiten wo Dürren die Welternten gefährlich schmälern. (So hat die SZ es "Entwicklungspolitikern" und "Umweltwissenschaftlern" in den Mund gelegt.) In dem Text ist von "milliardenschweren Subventionen" die Rede.

Sucht man konkrete Zahlen, wird die Luft aber schnell ganz, ganz dünn. Doch bei der Global Subsidies Initiative des International Institute for Sustainable Development (iisd) gibt es - leider schon etwas ältere dafür aber umfassende - Informationen über einzelne Länder. MediaWatch beschränkt sich hier auf ausgewählte Industrienationen und hat die Angaben in den jeweiligen Währungen belassen:

- the Australian government spent A$ 95 million on supporting biofuel production and consumption in 2006-07;
- total government transfers to biofuels approached (...) an average of around $300 million CAD per year in Canada;
- annual support for biofuels provided by EU governments reached € 3.7 billion in 2006;
2008, total transfers in support of biofuels associated with the policies of the EU and its Member States amounted to € 3.01 billion
- in 2007 the Swiss federal government spent (or exempted from taxes) around CHF 12 million supporting the production and consumption of biofuels;
- subsidies to biofuels [in the USA] were between $5.5 billion and $7.3 billion in 2005;
the biofuels industry [in the USA] will, in aggregate, benefit from support worth over $ 92 billion within the 2006 - 2012 time frame.
